I checked out the corporate citizen ratings on California Baby, and they’re good enough that I felt confident that their labeling and promotional materials were accurate. Which is why I didn’t expect it to work very well. I thought it would be better than nothing and would cause me the least worry about my son’s health, but, having been chewed alive while sitting in a citronella fog, I really expected my son to have bites at the end of our camping trip in the Green Mountains. He didn’t, and neither did I. We were quite liberal with reapplication, but the ingredients are nontoxic, so it’s okay to reapply. The mist is really fine, so even after spraying both of us down pretty frequently, the bottle is hardly touched. I was totally stunned by how well it worked. 23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. We first tried Badger Balm, a repellent with similar ingredients but that was, even immediately after having been applied, totally ineffective. Still wanting to avoid DEET-containing repellents, I opted to try California Baby’s Bug Repellent. It does work, but with a couple caveats. One is that you must VERY liberally apply it, and if you’ve missed a spot the mosquitoes will find it. But once we did manage to get every square inch of exposed skin, the mosquitoes turned tail and ran. But they didn’t go far. As you sweat (and in 100+ weather, you will sweat) the stuff seems to become diluted. So reapplication is necessary roughly every 15-20 minutes. Fortunately, the every-square-inch method didn’t seem to be as crucial for successive applications… which made it somewhat less a hassle. And I suppose all-in-all it’s a reasonable trade-off to the unsavory alternative: Be eaten alive. As an aside I’ve read elsewhere that reapplication is necessary with any non-DEET product, and that the average time before non-DEET repellents wear off is about 20 minutes. In other words, I don’t think we’ll find anything that works better, considering our no-DEET rule. Two other points in favor of this Bug Repellent are the Skin Deep Rating: 0 hazard. Which is beyond fantastic. Apply and reapply without worrying about hideous long-term health effects. And the second point in its favor is that the smell is actually milder than some other all-natural sprays, I dare say it’s even pleasant. I’ll definitely be buying more of this, even at the steep cost. Fortunately we can find it locally, because buying it online plus shipping would just make it unaffordable. 26 of 28 people found the following review helpful. However, Amazon is ripping you off with the price. I bought this on sale at Target for under $10…regular price $11-12 at Target. Amazon is listing this for $18. |
